Online classifieds are convenient, but it is crucial to protect yourself from scams and ensure a safe transaction
By following a few best practices for both buying and selling, you can significantly minimize your risk.
Before you buy
- Insist on a local, in-person meetup. Never agree to ship items, especially if the seller claims to be in a different country. A scammer will often insist on shipping and ask for payment upfront.
- Research the market value. If a deal looks too good to be true, it almost always is. Scammers bait victims with low prices to pressure them into a quick, risky transaction.
- Examine the seller's profile and other listings. Reputable classified sites and social media marketplaces usually have user profiles. A profile with little information, no reviews, or stock photos can be a red flag.
- Search for the listing title or text online. Scammers often copy real listings. A quick search can reveal if the same ad text or photos appear in multiple places, which indicates fraud.
- Ask for more photos or a video. If the listing only contains stock images, request new, specific photos or a video of the item. A genuine seller should have no problem providing this.
During the meetup
- Meet in a well-lit, public place. Safe exchange zones are often available at police stations or other monitored public spaces.
- Bring a companion. Having a friend or family member with you adds an extra layer of security.
- Only deal in cash for smaller items. This eliminates the risk of bounced checks or chargebacks. For larger purchases, like a car, meet inside a bank to handle the transaction securely.
- Thoroughly inspect the item before paying. Check for flaws and test functionality. For expensive electronics, record serial numbers and test the device. If the seller pressures you or discourages an inspection, walk away.
When you list your ad
- Limit personal information. Never include your home address, phone number, or other sensitive details in your initial ad.
- Use real photos. Upload clear, high-quality images of the actual item you are selling. This builds trust with legitimate buyers.
- Be clear and concise. Avoid sensational or keyword-stuffed titles. A straightforward and accurate listing attracts serious buyers.
During communication
- Decline suspicious requests. Be wary of buyers who offer to pay more than your asking price or insist on unusual payment methods like wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
- Confirm payment before sending. If you receive a check or online payment notification, do not send the item until you have verified the funds have cleared in your account. Scammers often send fake payment confirmations.
- Insist on communicating through the app. If a buyer insists on moving the conversation to a different platform, like email or text, it could be a sign of a scam. Sticking to the platform's chat feature helps keep a record of the conversation.
At the time of the sale
- Hold the meetup in a safe, public location. Avoid inviting strangers to your home. If the item is too large to transport, arrange to meet in your garage or entryway and be accompanied by someone else.
- Refuse requests to enter your home. One scam involves one person distracting you while a partner steals other items from your home. Politely decline any requests to use your restroom or enter your house.
- Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable for any reason—whether it's the buyer's demeanor, a strange request, or something else—it is always best to walk away from the deal.
